When most people hear the name Tressel, Coach Jim Tressel is usually the person that comes immediately to mind. For someone who hails from Northeast Ohio, it may be his father, Lee, that jumps out first.

On Saturday, Baldwin-Wallace College’s field at The George Finnie Stadium was officially dedicated as Tressel Field at halftime of the game against John Carroll. Coach Tressel, along with brothers Dick and Dave, donated the funds needed to replace the artificial turf in honor of their father. All four Tressel men played for and graduated from B-W.

Lee Tressel played fullback for the Yellow Jackets from 1943-1947 and returned as a coach in 1958. Over the course of a 23-year career that spanned four decades, Tressel amassed a 155-52-6 record, led his team to the Division III National Championship in 1978 and was named National Coach of the Year. To date, Lee and Jim Tressel are the only father and son in college football history to have each won national championships.

In his recent best-selling book The Winners Manual, Coach Tressel reflected on the man he knew as both father and coach:

“The great impact my father had on his players was readily apparent to me. It wasn’t just in watching him with the team he was coaching each year; it was also the number of former players who came back year after year seeking counsel on some life issue or wanting just to sit in our living room and talk. They valued my father’s opinion. Many looked up to him as the father they never had. That was something that really made me feel good about his contribution, and I could see how rewarding a career in coaching might be.”

A rare Monday update from Ohio State after the four captains were made available on a conference call for USC week.

Ohio State running back Beanie Wells didn’t practice but was testing his injured right foot today, according to OSU linebacker James Laurinaitis.

“I saw him on the sidelines a little bit, running and seeing how it felt and he looked good,” Laurinaitis said. “From what I could tell it looked like he was running great.”

On the depth chart released by Ohio State today, Wells is listed as the starter. When Wells sat out against Ohio on Saturday, he was listed as the starter on the pregame depth chart, but Dan Herron was listed as a co-starter with him.

In other news, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins said that although former starting cornerback Donald Washington, along with backup safety Jamario O’Neal, is returning from a two-game suspension this week, Chimdi Chekwa still worked as a starting corner on today, with Washington rotating in on occasion. They are listed as co-starters on the depth chart.

Laurinaitis said that defensive tackle Todd Denlinger, who sat out the second half Saturday with an injury, told him he feels better every day and should be ready for USC. And, by the way, Terrelle Pryor is officially listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart for the first time, ahead of Joe Bauserman.

Also, receiver Brian Robiskie said the shoulder he injured during the preseason did not bother him Saturday.

“When you get in the flow of things and your adrenaline is going, it’s not something that you think about too much,” Robiskie said.

Buckeyes survive

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Chris “Beanie” Wells spent the afternoon in sneakers and sweats, but he still found a way to help his Ohio State teammates.

Unable to contribute with his feet, Wells used his mouth. After a sluggish first half from the Buckeyes’ offense, the normally subdued Wells tried to spark his teammates.

“He was actually pretty intense there a little bit,” quarterback Todd Boeckman said. “Just getting after us, yelling at us, just trying to cheer us up a little bit.”

Buckeyes redshirt freshman Dan “Boom” Herron and the other backs filling in for Wells had him in their ears all game. His message was clear.

“Just keep on running,” Herron remembers hearing. “Something’s going to open up.”

It took the better part of three quarters, but Herron and teammates Maurice Wells and Brandon Saine finally saw some daylight in a 26-14 win against Ohio. The three reserves combined for 113 yards on 26 carries.

Both Herron and Saine found the end zone, and Maurice Wells finished with the best yards-per-carry average (5.3), but it took time for all three to get going. Ohio State finished with just six rushing yards in the first quarter. Then after a Malcolm Jenkins interception put the offense in scoring position, Wells was stuffed on fourth-and-1 at the Ohio 29-yard line.

Between-the-tackles runs were a struggle most of the game, and the Buckeyes seemed to have more success on the edges.

“We probably performed maybe B-minus-wise,” Maurice Wells said. “We ran the ball well and we protected well when our chances came, but as far as the running backs, it’s not really so much what you do. It’s the whole offense. The O-line has to block well, we have to run well and hit creases and break tackles. We did well, but not as well as we could have.”

Would Chris Wells have made a difference?

“We just didn’t execute,” center Jim Cordle said. “I don’t think having him in there would have made that big of a difference.”

Herron expects Chris Wells to be “very good” next week against USC, but if the junior is limited by a toe injury, the Buckeyes’ reserves are ready to step in.

“He’s a very important part of our offense,” Herron said, “but you can’t just say that we’re done [if he doesn’t play]. We have a ton of great athletes on our team and in our offense. Beanie is a big part, but we have a team.”

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that Time Warner and The Big Ten Network have finally come to an agreement and The Big Ten Network will start airing on Wednesday in Time Warner’s basic Cable package.  This all comes on the same day that the four letter network(ESPN) announced that Terrelle Pryor will play some in the first half this Saturday against Youngstown State.  Todd Boekman will start, however Jim Tressel has a certain package planned for Pryor.
